Your Mountaineer Timeline for First-Time Freshmen
This timeline is for first-time freshmen with a fall 2026 term start. Students interested in a spring or summer 2026 start are encouraged to contact their WVU Admissions Counselor for assistance.
August
- WVU offers a rolling admission.

Schedule a visit to WVU
In-person, virtual, and self-guided options are available, including daily Visitors Center tours and open house events. - Pro Tip: If you're unable to schedule an in-person visit, check out our virtual tour or register to attend a webinar.
October
- The Promise Scholarship application is available to West Virginia residents on October 1.
- Pro Tip: The Promise Scholarship application requires test scores (ACT or SAT). Additionally, a completed FAFSA must be submitted by March 1.
November
- The Honors College application is open, and eligible students are invited to apply.
- Pro Tip: Check your WVU MIX email frequently for information.
December
- Scholarship notifications are sent to admitted students via their WVU MIX email in early December.

January
- The housing application opens mid-January. Admitted students with a paid academic deposit are eligible to pay the housing deposit and complete the application.
- Pro Tip: First-time freshmen are required to live on campus their first year. Students eligible for a housing exemption are required to complete the housing application. Learn more about the First-Year Live On Requirement (FYLOR).
February
- Connect with your Admissions Counselor and sign up for a one-on-one appointment.
- Adventure WV First-Year Trips registration opens for admitted students.
- Register to attend a virtual session with experienced staff and current students. Topics include residence life, academics and majors, financial aid, and enrollment steps.
March
- WVU's FAFSA priority deadline is March 1.
- Pro Tip: March 1 is also the deadline to submit FAFSA for the West Virginia Promise Scholarship.
- New Student Orientation details are sent in mid-March to admits who have paid the academic deposit.
April
- The housing room selection process opens in mid-April for admitted students with an academic deposit, housing deposit, and housing application on file.
- Pro Tip: Learn about your housing options and Living-Learning Communities prior to selection.
- Take the ALEKS math placement assessment.
- Pro Tip: ALEKS is required of all first-time freshmen prior to meeting with an academic adviser and scheduling courses during New Student Orientation.
May
- The deadline to cancel your WVU attendance for the fall term and receive a full refund of the academic deposit is May 1.
- Pro Tip: You can cancel your attendance by logging into your MyWVU application dashboard and submitting a change request.
June
- All enrolled students are required to have health insurance. The Student Insurance Waiver is available for those enrolling with coverage. If you do not have coverage, you'll work with the Student Insurance Office.
- In-person New Student Orientation takes place throughout the month of June.
July
- Fall charges are applied to your bill and available in your WVU Portal beginning the first week of July.
- The Tuition Payment Plan is available in July for the fall semester.
- Housing will release information in July about residence hall move-in.
- Pro Tip: Watch your MIX email for details related to billing, payment, and residence hall move-in.
August
- Scholarship deadline: Students enrolling in the fall must be admitted by August 1 to be eligible for merit scholarships. Admitted students have until August 1 to submit updates to GPA or test scores. Earlier deadlines may apply for some awards.
- Move-in dates and times for residence halls will be released in July.
