Federal Work-Study

Work-Study is a form of financial aid that helps students pay for educational costs through part-time employment. Employers include many campus offices and departments and non-profit organizations. Most jobs are on-campus.

Students are placed in jobs through the Financial Aid Office Work Assignment process. Students are paid at least $5.50 per hour for the work that they do, and they receive a paycheck every two weeks for the hours they have worked.

Students who are awarded Federal Work-Study as part of their financial aid package can get their job assignment sheet during New Student Orientation in the Financial Aid Office on the second floor of the Mountainlair. Assignments also may be picked up during Student Services Days at the beginning of the fall semester or during the first week of class.

The Federal Work-Study offer included in the financial aid package is the maximum amount of money the student will be eligible to earn under the program; actual earnings are dependent upon the number of hours actually worked.

Federal Work-Study earnings are considered taxable income and are treated just like any other employment when completing tax returns. Work-Study earnings, however, are not considered as income on the FAFSA when the student re-applies for financial aid for the next school year.
