Our music education students benefit from an unusually comprehensive curriculum taught by nationally-recognized faculty members. Graduates can pursue a variety of careers on both the elementary and secondary school levels.

  • Programs in the Division of Music are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The Music Education Program is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teaching Education.
  • Any student who wishes to be considered for admission to the music program must audition so that the faculty can assess the student’s potential success in the program.
  • Upon completion of the program, graduates receive a bachelor’s degree in music and West Virginia Birth – Adult teaching certification.

What can I do with this major?

Music education majors are prepared to teach vocal, instrumental, and general music to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Those graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music education may also opt to continue their education in graduate school.

In recent years, full-time teaching position placement rates for non-placebound graduates have been nearly 100%.

Can I perform in a band or choir?

Definitely! The Division of Music is known for its wide range of music groups open to students, including the “Pride of West Virginia” Mountaineer Marching Band, the University Symphony Orchestra, the University Choir, Opera Theatre, and numerous ensembles. These are open to all qualified WVU students, including non-music majors. Auditions are required.
